Donna Danielson and Tom Kline, of Washington, N.J., were in line since 3 a.m. Aug. 2, the first day that members of Easton’s State Theatre Center for the Arts could purchase tickets for the 2017-18 season.

Jim and Shirley Van Norman of Easton got in line at 7 a.m. Aug. 1.

Marishka Michener and Marlene Frew, both of Easton, accompanied by Jeff Hawk, of Pohatcong Township, N.J., were first in line. All three had been camped out at the box office door since July 29.

Tickets became available for sale to the public Aug. 16.

The “members-only” tradition dates back to when tickets could only be purchased in person or by phone. The Aug. 2 morning refreshing weather made for a pleasant wait as some relaxed with reading materials or conversed with others in the line.

When tickets became available virtually on-line 18 years ago, it was decided to continue the “real-life on-line” to accommodate patrons who had viewed the yearly wait in line as part of their State Theatre-going experience. There is no discount on early-bird purchases.

“They want to choose their seats for every show,” explains State Theatre President and CEO Shelley Brown of those who show up in person.

Those in line enjoyed coffee and doughnuts.

They had access to a port-a-potty.

According to State Theatre house manager Frank Kutch, in addition to the ticket windows at the box office, two tables were set up in the lobby to handle traffic for the sales.

“I’m excited at the way people are reacting to the season,” Brown says of the mix of new shows with the return of “old friends.”

Season highlights for Brown include Straight No Chaser, John Cleese, The Oak Ridge Boys, Linda Eder, and The Fab Faux.
