Macungie Borough Council met Aug. 21 to continue the discussion of the Macungie Fire Department.

The State Auditor General wrote a letter to council about state aid saying the fire department was non-compliant. The aid is being withheld until an audit is complete and corrections are made. The letter cites unauthorized expenditures.

The fire department was able to account for $16,000 leaving $24,000 unexplained at this point.

There was a request for items to be fixed at the fire department. The department is willing to answer questions or explain.

One of the requests was for the Macungie Fire Department to supply the borough with a roster.

A roster was submitted Aug. 11 with discrepancies, particularly names of personnel. Another roster was received Aug. 10, again with discrepancies.

Former Macungie Fire Department Chief Tim Schantzenbach asked how it will be determined who belongs on the roster.

Council President Chris Becker said council will deal with this but it will take time to get it all straightened out.

Schantzenbach suggested getting phone numbers of the personnel listed on the roster or meet them in person.

A question arose about the suggested sale of the ladder truck from Schantzenbach. It was determined the ladder truck is not useful to Macungie as the ladder is its only function. If a need arises, it is suggested to reach out to neighboring departments. Council will investigate.

A question was raised about the vehicle used by former Fire Chief Mike Natysyn and whether he is still entitled to use it. It is unclear whether he is doing so.

The Hillcrest water tank will undergo refurbishing which should have little effect on residents.

In other business, the pension fund for police and other municipal employees is being analyzed. There is an opportunity to add more to the fund. It was put before council to decide on how this will be handled.

Karen Holt, Macungie Institute coordinator, is considering retirement at the end of the year. She wanted to ensure the borough is prepared.

A 30-hour police officer, Richton Penn, was approved. A part-time police officer, Joseph David, was also approved.

Road construction on Route 100 will begin Sept. 5. The Pennsylvania Department of Transporation requires an office so they will occupy a building at 142 W. Main St. The construction will not require closure of the road.

The Southwest Comprehensive Plan meeting will be held 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center. Items will be on display 6:30 p.m.
