LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

High spirits at Night in the Country not dampened by rain

The weather was beautiful and everyone was having fun at the Night in the Country, but half way through the fireworks, the rain came.

Despite the downpour, there were several fireworks set off, giving an almost 20-minute show.

Hannah Hans was helping at the Krysta Hankee Memorial Chinese auction. She was awarded a scholarship to Lehigh Carbon Community College to study in the veterinarian tech program.

Smoke rose from behind the Slatedale-Emerald Area Lions Club.

Even if it had been more serious than the sausages cooking for sandwiches, there were plenty of fire trucks around.

Sons of a Carpenter were raising funds so when a new project should come along they will be ready.

After Hurricane Katrina, they made three trips to Mississippi and helped restore a church.

At the community center in Kempton they built a house for the pastor. The house was dismantled, loaded on trucks and rebuilt in Mississippi.

The volunteers are from Weisenberg Lutheran Church. When there is a need, they also help in the local area.

“Here we are 12 years later still believing in the cause,” they said.

The firefighter games start out with best of three and work down to a champion. Each round is two minutes. At one point there was a yell “Come on, Schnecksville.”

The firefighters took a break and the kids used a smaller hose to weave around some cones and then put out the “fire” showing through the windows of the house.

A practice firework was set off at 7:10 p.m. when people were still expecting the weather to hold off.

As usual, Lynnacres dairy farm provided the cow that would choose the winner in cow flop bingo. People gathered around the “bingo card” by 7 p.m. to watch for Cherry’s arrival.

Crossroads Community Church provided a place to charge a phone.

Eddie Shane, who lives just down the road, brought his 1958 Dodge Custom Royal that has 37,000 miles on it.

He got the car from a friend. He said the four-door is not as popular as the two door for collectors, but it is fun to bring it to shows.

He especially likes the tail fins. He has others that need restoration, but it has to wait till his three girls complete college.
