East Allen Township’s recreation Director Chuck Frantz closed the door on the township’s summer camp Aug. 3.
“This was another successful year. We had 150 campers and a good cadre of staff who supervise the kids,” he said.
The camp has a full slate of activities during its seven-week run. Campers get a dose of physical activity along with some educational programs. This year included visits to Wildlands Conservancy. Wildlands also stopped back twice, bringing a bevy of wild animals.
Not only is the camp educational, it also includes trips to the Roxy Theater and Rita’s.
“This year, the highlight was a trip to the (Lehigh Valley) zoo and the giraffe house,” Frantz said.
East Allen’s campers, along with friends and parents, made a donation last year to help build the giraffe house. According to Frantz, this year there was a bigger goal.
“We collected $1,500 for a bench outside the giraffe house,” he said.
It was more than a feel-good award. Campers had a private day at the zoo and were able to feed the giraffe.
“We have pretty much adopted Murphy (the giraffe), so we want to keep our contact with the zoo,” Frantz said. “The kids find the experience at the zoo the highlight of the camp.”
Every year, the camp closes with a Christmas in July event and a final picnic. The Crayola Experience is a contributor and provided campers with goodies at the “holiday” festivities.
“We are planning now for next year’s camp,” Frantz said. “Each year, we get a little better, thanks to the help and input we get from the camp counselors. They are a great group and keep coming back to assist us.”
