Walking around the Neffs Volunteer Fire Company Fire House at 3755 Park Avenue injects history into a person’s soul.

The “Pride of Park Avenue” has been serving the community for 75 years.

And, from 2-6 p.m. Aug. 20, the volunteer firefighters will welcome members of the community to an open house to celebrate that special anniversary.

“Pride of Park Avenue originated during an informal discussion among some of the firefighters 20 years ago,” Neffs Fire Chief James Steward told The Press.

Steward has been with Neffs since 1980, and became the fire chief in 1992 during the station’s 50 anniversary.

“I think people should come to the open house to share our 75th anniversary milestone,” Steward said. “The community should know and appreciate the spirit of volunteerism. That spirit is why the fire company has lasted so long.

“The station first operated in 1942 operating from an unused livery stable behind the Neffs Hotel along Route 873. Our fire company has come a long way.”

Volunteer firefighter Stephen Reimert, also spoke with The Press.

“During that time, when there was a fire call, people would call the Neffs Hotel Bar and the bartender would push a button that would signal the Neffs volunteer firefighters to respond,” Reimert said.

Reimert has been with the fire company for 18 years, following in his dad’s footsteps.

“My dad Kenneth has been a Neffs volunteer firefighter for 30 years,” Reimert said. “Volunteer firefighting is very family oriented.”

Steward’s son, daughter and future son in-law are also volunteers.

“It is very nice to see my family keeping the spirit of firefighting going,” Steward said.

Neffs Assistant Fire Chief and President Eric Minnich has been with Neffs since 1991.

He became president 10 years ago.

“The open house is a 75th anniversary celebration recognizing where our station has come,” Minnich said. “It is a way to reach out to the community for fire prevention and public education.

“We are also celebrating our members and their families. Families sacrifice just as much as firefighters, 75 years of families supporting our efforts is a very big deal.”

The Northern Lehigh Area Safety Trailer is coming to demonstrate fire escape plans and in-home fire safety. Bounce castles will be set up for kids to play in. Sparky the Fire Dog, a mascot developed by the National Fire Administration, will be there to educate and entertain the youngsters.

Penn Star Flight medical helicopter may also land on site depending on availability.

“Hot dogs, chips, birch beer and other refreshments will be provided at no charge,” Reimert said. “Crystal Springs Dairy, Neffs, will provide ice cream, too.

“A small ceremony will take place discussing our company’s history and hopes for the future.

“State Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, and other township representatives may also attend.”
