The Lower Macungie Board of Commissioners and staff are holding the 12th Annual Troop Support Program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who won’t be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call 610-966-6924, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Sept. 5 through Dec. 1. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center. Over the last 11 years 1,005 boxes of donated items were sent to 119 soldiers.

The Macungie Band will perform 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Hills at Lockridge Park.

The Lower Macungie Township Library will be closed Sept. 4 in observation of Labor Day.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Sept. 6 to discuss “Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter” by Kate Clifford Lawson. The book for Oct. 4 is “The Round House” by Louise Erdrich.

The library is sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C. Sept. 2 for the National Book Festival or for sightseeing. The bus leaves 6:30 a.m. and leaves D.C. 5 p.m. The reservation deadline is Aug. 19.

There will be a paper book art craft drop-by 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

Businesses and individuals can prepare submissions for the title of “Lower Macungie Library’s Best Soup” at the second annual Taste of Soup noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 28. There is an entry fee for competitors and an admission fee for tasters who will receive tickets to vote. For more information, contact the library circulation desk.

The Friends of the Lower Macungie Library will have a one-day summer book sale 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 26. Volunteers are needed for set-up Aug. 25, check-out and tidying up Aug. 26 and clean-up Aug. 28. Summer book sorting continues 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays. Heavy lifting is not required.

The next Friends meeting is scheduled 10 a.m. Sept. 16 in the library. Volunteers are welcome.

The Lower Macungie Pool is open daily noon to 7 p.m. through Aug. 27. The pool will be closed Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 and will re-open noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 2 to 4 for Labor Day weekend. For more information, check the website www.lowermac.org.

The Lower Macungie Fire Department will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at the fire station at Sauerkraut Lane. There will be information on fire prevention, face painting, fire truck tours, Medevac helicopter, state police, food and beverages.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Aug. 21 and Sept. 18 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The community center offers a number of activities. Summer children’s programs include tennis lessons and drawing and painting art camps. Adult programs include card making classes, Latin partner dance classes and meal prep workshops.

There will be a safe sitter program for students 11 years and older 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at the township center. Enrollment is limited to eight students.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site spring/summer hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off. Applications can be found at www.lowermac.com. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.

My mother asked me to pick up some stamps for her, but no more “Love” stamps. I like the latest Love stamps with the airplane skywriting the word “Love” so I asked, “Why, don’t you like them?” She replied, “I like them but I don’t want to put them on my bills because I don’t love paying them!”
