Donald Edgar Kunkel, 88, of Emmaus, died Aug. 10, 2017, in his home. He was the husband of Joanne (Hoffert) Kunkel for 63 years. Born in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of the late Barton and Dorothy Kunkel, and the stepson of the late Sarah Kunkel.

He graduated from Allentown High School in 1946 and went on to enlist in the Merchant Marines as a merchant mariner. During that time, he traveled the world.

He was employed by Lehigh Valley Dairy, Boise Cascade, and retired as a Realtor/appraiser for Riggs Real Estate in Allentown.

During retirement, he was a handyman and enjoyed going to yard sales and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Robyn Balzano, fiancee of Bruce Clauser, of Coopersburg, and Patricia and her husband Glenn Herman, of Verona, N.J.; brother, Barton and his wife Marge, of Allentown; sister, Charlotte Miller, of Bethlehem; grandchildren, Renee (Herman) and her husband Brent Garber, Nicholas Balzano Jr., and his fiancee Luisa Pieroni, Dr. Lauren (Herman) and her husband Kevin Thompson; and Anthony Balzano; great grandchildren, Owen, Emma and Reid Thompson, Lucy and Caroline Garber, and Nicholas Balzano III. He was predeceased by sisters, Barbara Standiford and Joan Crane.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Aug. 16 at the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 225 Elm St., Emmaus. A viewing will be held 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
