During the Aug. 3 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting, Sharon Colson was awarded a proclamation for her years of service as a permit coordinator. After 32 years of service, Colson has decided to retire. The commissioners said Colson was a valuable asset and would be missed.

“She is a treasure,” Commissioner Brian Higgins said.

A hearing was held for the transfer of the liquor license from the South Whitehall Outback location to the newly constructed Outback on Krocks Road near Hamilton Crossings. The transfer will take effect when the new restaurant opens in November. Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Township Engineer Alan Fornwalt reported the Macungie Road bridge reconstruction is moving along. The goal is to have the road open before East Penn School District opens for the school year.

Fornwalt also proposed a bid award for the manhole maintenance and rehabilitation project. The company, PennBid will also be used by North Whitehall Township and Coplay Borough.

The recent rehabilitation of the Mill Race bridge was jeopardized by weather problems including excessive damage to one of the abutments. This will be repaired and can be done without closing the bridge or the road.

Two chestnut trees will be planted at Sauerkraut Lane and Mill Creek Road. They will replace two dead trees. There was a possibility of planting a number of trees but this was turned down as it would make for a sight problem at the intersection.

There is an issue in the Penn’s West development with a recreational vehicle parked in the development. A representative from the neighborhood presented the commissioners with a large number of signatures about the parking of this camper right in the middle of the clubhouse area.

The representative said the vehicle causes sight problems in the area and dangers for people walking, kids on bikes and skate boards and other motorists. The owner of the vehicle does not even live in the neighborhood because in the neighborhood he resides, the residents of that neighborhood told him that they did not want it there.

An ordinance will be drawn up to eliminate parking of oversized vehicles on Pioneer Drive.
