The first-place winner of Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21’s third annual Math 24 Challenge for fourth and fifth graders was Thomas Gilchrist, of Kernsville Elementary School.
The students competed with school districts in Lehigh and Carbon counties in a game called 24, based on mental math and speed.
The goal was to get a solution of 24 from a card that gives four numbers.
Difficulty increased round by round, as more number wheels were incorporated, and eventually, a variable number spot.
With a variable card, students needed to figure out the missing number, while also finding a solution that results in the number 24.
Runners up and the first-place winner advanced to the state competition in June.
