Wesley United Methodist Church, located at 2540 Center St. in Bethlehem, is gearing up for its 2017 Backpack Festival scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. School supplies for elementary school-aged children, along with new socks and underwear, can be dropped off at the church.
“We want children to know they are loved, valued and important,” said program director Sue Kiefner. She and Pastor Andrew Krpata recently thanked Northampton County Council for a $17,000 CDBG grant, which will enable the church to expand its program beyond the 2,000 backpacks that will be distributed this year. Council member Matt Dietz has volunteered to direct traffic Aug. 19th.
When the program first started five years ago, 700 filled back packs were distributed, along with underwear and socks until the supply was exhausted.
In addition to the school supplies and necessities, Vision Beauty Academy will be on hand to provide free hair cuts. Vision tests will also be provided at no charge, along with free lunch.
