Everything is a go for ‘Night’

The 19th annual Night in the Country community celebration will take place Aug. 19 with a rain date of Aug. 20 at the Northwestern Recreation Commission Community Park, Northwest Road and Route 309, New Tripoli.

“Everything is a go,” “Night” Committee Chair Kathy Hermany said at the recreation commission’s July meeting.

There will be a huge food court, more than an acre of cars to view, firefighter competitions and games and activities.

Cherr the cow will choose the winning number for the cow flop bingo.

THE Miller-Keystone Blood Center will be on hand as well as a number of fire companies with their trucks on display.

Live music will be on stage until it is time to get ready for the fireworks, the main event of the evening for many people.

A gate for pedestrians has been placed in the area of the fence behind the gas station along Route 309 so “Night” attendees will be safer walking in and out with the cruise cars in motion.

The playground was mulched and checked for ground bees.

In other matters discussed at the meeting, the 19-plus softball team had requested field 7 for July 16 and 23 but those dates were already taken.

The other nights they requested were approved in June.

Member Steve Bachman, of Heidelberg Township, said the rewritten bylaws have been approved by his municipality.

President Don Link will check with the solicitor to see what advertising requirements must be met.

Weisenberg Township representative Linda Gorgas said one field that was seeded had the straw wash down into a basin during a storm.

She noted that three fields will definitely be ready for 2018 play.

Instead of two batting cages a 70-foot long one that can be split in the center providing two 35-foot batting cages is under consideration. Certified drawings are needed for the permitting process for the batting cages.

USSA softball reserved several dates to use the fields and then canceled.

To avoid that in the future, a cancellation fee will be discussed at the August meeting.

Maintenance worker Jim Hughes thanked Ruth Raber, not Bruce Raber, as previously reported, for taking care of the grounds while he was out of town.
