El Sistema Lehigh Valley concludes school year

El Sistema Lehigh Valley (ESLV) students presented a year-end concert June 8 in Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

Program director Norma Nunez, now in her second year, led the concert of elementary and middle school students in the Vivaldi String Ensemble, Stravinsky String Ensemble, and the Mozart String Ensemble. Middle school students, who make up the Fellowship of the Strings, performed. Students from all levels participated in the El Sistema Lehigh Valley Choir. A first-time performance was presented by the ESLV Parents Ensemble.

El Sistema Lehigh Valley students represented the United States in the national video, “Love People,” an initiative of Ismar Poric, Executive Director of El Sistema Sberenica, Bosnia. More than 1,000 children from 15 countries participated.

Kiana Gonzales, the first El Sistema Lehigh Valley student to graduate from high school in June 2017, was offered a $140,000 scholarship by the University of La Verne, La Verne, Calif.

Two El Sistema students and three teachers are attending the “Take A Stand Festival,” Los Angeles, hosted by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

There’s four weeks of instruction July 10 - Aug. 3, culminating with a family picnic and concert Aug. 3 and a performance Aug. 4 at the Preferred Cycling Velodrome, Trexlertown.

El Sistema Lehigh Valley, now in its sixth year, serves more than 90 students from Roosevelt Elementary School, South Mountain Middle School and Dieruff High School in the Allentown School District, as well as area charter schools.

El Sistema Lehigh Valley is a program of the Allentown Symphony Association.
