A regional summer aggressive driving traffic enforcement detail was marked locally by a joint Salisbury Township/Allentown traffic law enforcement detail along Fish Hatchery Road, at the border between the township and the City of Allentown, July 6.

Salisbury Township Police Department traffic safety officer Cpl. Bryan Losagio said the local effort was part of an effort by police departments from around the state participating in aggressive driving enforcement. Targeted offenses included speeding, running of red lights, weaving in and out of traffic and other dangerous driving acts which statistics say are the leading cause of motor vehicle accidents.

Losagio said the wave of enforcement details in Salisbury Township will last for several weeks and motorists should expect to see an increase in police traffic enforcement patrols. Losagio said law enforcement agencies throughout the region were encouraged to mount details in their local areas July 6 to emphasize the widespread effort to get aggressive drivers to change their driving habits.

Speeding citations during the July 6 operation ranged from 15 to 21 miles per hour over the posted limit, Losagio said, “despite the fact that we had large ‘traffic enforcement area’ signs and blinking digital ‘slow down’ signs ahead of the enforcement area where electronic equipment clocked speeding drivers.”

The Fish Hatchery Road detail netted 41 traffic citations, Losagio said. Of the citations, 24 were for speeding, nine for registration violations, four for expired state safety inspections, three for motorists driving without vehicle insurance and one for a driver who had a suspended licensed for a past DUI offense.

“We want to get the word out that police are on the lookout for dangerous driving,” Losagio said. “We want drivers to think twice before weaving in and out of traffic, to think before speeding or before running that ‘yellow light.’”

Salisbury police have several traffic safety enforcement details planned in the weeks to come. Some will occur during morning and afternoon rush hours, as well as overnight details to target drunk drivers, Losagio said.

“We are trying to make our streets and roads safer for township residents and for those who are passing through our area. Aggressive driving puts everyone at risk and we want to raise that awareness and apprehend unsafe drivers,” Losagio said.
