SALISBURY TOWNSHIP

Salisbury Township officials indicate they expect to continue the township’s refuse-hauling contract with Republic Services.

A one-year extension of the contract with the township’s trash and recycling hauler was discussed during the July 13 township meeting workshop.

“It [the contract with Republic] will be coming up for renewal at the end of the year,” Salisbury Township Manager Cathy Bonaskiewich informed commissioners during the workshop.

She noted the contract can be extended for two one-year terms.

“Otherwise, we must prepare a document to put it [waste collection] out to bid,” Bonaskiewich said.

By consensus, commissioners agreed to authorize Bonaskiewich to continue the trash-hauling contract with Republic.

“I will work out the details for the garbage-handling and get back to the board,” Bonaskiewich said.

Bonaskiewich, in an email response to The Press, said Salisbury Township signed its refuse-hauling contract with Republic Feb. 20, 2015, and it went into effect March 1, 2015.

The contract is for a three-year base bid, March 2015 to February 2018, with options to extend the contract for two additional years, March 2018 to February 2019 and March 2019 to February 2020.

The contract amount for the first three years increased 2 percent each year from $993,762 in the first year up to $1,033,910 in the third year.

The fourth-year increase would be to $1,064,927, which is 3 percent. The contract amount would also increase 3 percent for the fifth year.

“Even though it would amount to an increase to residents, it is normal,” Bonaskiewich said, adding of the township trash hauling situation, ”We don’t have the simplest of routes. They [Republic] are very responsive if there is a problem,” Bonaskiewich said.
