A driver was injured July 5 when his minivan was struck by a Norfolk Southern train in Lower Macungie Township.

In a brief phone interview July 9, a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Jeremy Trooper said the driver, whose name has not yet been released, suffered minor injuries, including bruising and was taken to a hospital for treatment but is now home.

Temple described the minivan as “demolished” by the train. It was struck in the rear as it crossed in front of the train.

The driver was the only occupant of the minivan and no one was injured on the train, Temple said.

In a telephone interview July 6, Jon Glass, a spokesman with Norfolk Southern, said the incident happened just before 5 p.m. July 5 at the Orchard Road crossing near Alburtis

A Norfolk Southern train, pulled by three locomotives and carrying 14 loaded shipping containers, was eastbound en route to Croxton, N.J., an intermodal terminal for the train line, Glass said.

An intermodal train is defined as a train moving freight in a container or vehicle without the freight itself being handled when changing methods or modes of transportation.

In the area where the incident happened, trains can travel up to 55 mph, Glass said. A train traveling at about 50 mph needs about a mile of track to make an emergency stop when an emergency brake is applied.

“It’s not like stopping a car,” Glass said.

The train was 3,631 feet long, according to Glass.

The crossing where the train line and Orchard Road intersects is controlled by stop signs, Glass said.
