The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. Aug. 2 to discuss “The Marriage of Opposites” by Alice Hoffman. The book for Sept. 6 is “Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter” by Kate Clifford Lawson.

The 8-week Great Decisions program by the Foreign Policy Association continues 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 9. Program booklets and copies of the required weekly reading are available at the library. Each session includes a 30-minute video followed by a discussion. The topics include the European Union, Geopolitics of Energy, Trade Policy, South China Sea and Saudi Arabia.

“Determined Spirit: the Story of Amelia Earhart” will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 27. Actor and historian Monica Hoffman will perform as Amelia Earhart.

There will be an Amazing Library Race for students entering grades one through five 1 to 2 p.m. July 22. Teams will complete challenges to race through the Dewey Decimal System.

There will be a book discussion group for grades four through eight 11 a.m. July 28. The book will be “The Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark” by Ridley Pearson.

Family Fun Nights are back. Celebrate Our World will be held 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 24. There will be games, crafts, snacks and fun from around the world and maybe a few surprises.

Teen Thursdays will be offered for students entering grades six through 12. There will be a CD Scratch Art activity 1 to 2 p.m. July 20. There will be a Teen After-Hours Lock-In 5 to 8 p.m. July 21. There will be an Amazing Library Race, a race through the Dewey Decimal System with team challenges, as well as games, videos or sing-alongs. Teen movie afternoon will be held 1 to 3 p.m. July 27. Snacks will be provided.

The best of LEAP into Science will be held 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 12 for ages four to 11 years old with an adult caregiver. There will be hands-on science fun.

The library offers “Book a Librarian” services for one-on-one help with using eReaders, downloading eBooks, tablets or computer programs such as Excel and Microsoft Word. Class size is limited and sign-up is required for the above events. The library is now accepting books for the fall book sale. They will not accept textbooks, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, magazines, outdated medical/travel books or dirty/water damaged books. A tax deductible receipt will be provided on request. Book sorting for the next book sale will continue 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays.

The Friends of the Lower Macungie Library will have a one-day summer book sale 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 26. Volunteers are needed for set-up Aug. 25; check-out and tidying up Aug. 26 and clean-up Aug. 28. Heavy lifting is not required.

The next Friends meeting is 10 a.m. Sept. 16 in the library. New volunteers are welcome.

The Lower Macungie Pool is open daily noon to 8 p.m. in July. August hours are noon to 7 p.m. There will be music by New Passages with Randy and Margaret Ritter 2 to 4 p.m. July 22. School’s Out Band will perform 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 29 at East Texas Park. The Marine Band will perform 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12 at Prater Park. The Macungie Band will perform 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Hills at Lockridge Park.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Aug. 7 and 21 at the Lower Macungie Community Center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site spring/summer hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for dropoff. Applications can be found at www.lowermac.com. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.

Matt and Ben recently returned from a week at Boy Scout camp. Despite a week of rain and thunderstorms, they managed to enjoy themselves. One evening one of the adults spied a black bear wandering through camp and even caught a picture of it. Several boys who were nearby hid in a port-a-pot until it left. A couple nights later, they heard a growling noise and ran outside to check it out. There they found one of the Scouts brushing his teeth. He said he was mad because he had dropped something and growled! Apparently everyone was a little spooked by the bear sighting.
