Little pantry at church offers free foodstuffs

Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, has set up a small pantry at its main entrance this spring as a way to reach out to people who need food and other basic supplies in an emergency.

Interim Pastor Mark Swanson commented on the pantry.

“This is something to sustain life until they can get something more substantial,” Swanson said.

Built by The Journeymen with help from some Eagle Scouts, the pantry consists of a small cabinet with a door which is always unlocked.

Council member Irene Folk, caretaker of the pantry, said various food items and personal hygiene products are available inside the unit for anyone in need.

In addition to nonperishable food, the pantry may include toothpaste, soap, diaper wipes or other personal items which could be needed by users.

Folk stocks the pantry with donated food and supplies and may purchase items as necessary from monetary contributions.

She said the pantry will help people with unexpected expenses and who are unable to buy what they need.

Folk explained that the idea for the project came from a story in a Lutheran newsletter about a church in another state which put up a mini food pantry.

“They are starting to pop up around hospitals, churches and anywhere there’s a need,” Folk said. “We’re excited the congregation came together on this really fast.”

Folk emphasized the food and supplies are available free to anyone.

“They can just come and take what they need,” she said. “They don’t have to ask.

“They can come any time of night or day, not only when the church is open. It is a very safe location.”
