Civic responsibility is learned over time and through experience and at Lincoln Elementary School, Karen Gennaro’s all day kindergarten class has begun discovering the labor and the joy of community service. A recent pine cone experiment project combined class activities with Emmaus borough beautification.
Students created pine cone experiment kits which they sold to friends, family and other students. The project required the children study trees as well as construct and operate a school store. The store was built using cardboard boxes.
Recently, Reds Bailey of the Emmaus Shade Tree Commission visited Gennaro’s class and discussed the importance and value of trees. The children responded to questions, offered observations and recited a pine tree poem.
The visit concluded with class representative Jonah Wilson presenting Bailey with a $200 donation – the proceeds from the pine cone experiment – for the Emmaus Shade Tree Fund.
The money will be used for the purchase and planting of a tree within the borough at a “to be determined” site. Bailey thanked Gennaro and her students for helping to keep Emmaus green.
