LV Museum:

The 100th anniversary of World War 1 and Lehigh Valley contributions to the war effort will be commemorated at 1 p.m. July 15, Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, 432 W. Walnut St., Allentown.

The program includes a slide lecture and photographs illustrating how the Lehigh Valley and its residents contributed to the war effort, said Joseph Garrera, Executive Director of the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum.

More than 20,000 trained at Camp Crane, set up at the Allentown Fairgrounds, 17th and Liberty streets, Allentown, headquarters of the United States Army Ambulance Service, preparing ambulance drivers and other medical personnel to serve on the war front. Trainees began arriving at Camp Crane June 1, 1917, living in converted Fairgrounds barns and sheds.

Bethlehem Steel, Traylor Engineering, Mack Trucks, and other local companies produced military weapons, vehicles, and barbed wire for the trenches.
