A 57-year-old Newark, N.J., man had to be extricated from his 2016 Volvo VNL tractor after it jackknifed 2:20 a.m. July 7 on I-78, Greenwich Township, Berks County.

State Police Troop L Hamburg say Byung D. An’s tractor trailer traveled off the roadway before striking the guard rail along the right side.

According to police, weather conditions were poor due to rain, and the road surface was wet.

Following the initial impact, the tractor struck a tree on the right side of the road, causing it to jackknife.

The tractor came to a final rest at the point of secondary impact, facing east, police say.

The trailer came to a final rest across both westbound lanes of travel, facing north.

Byung was extricated from his tractor by mechanical means, police say.

He was transported by Kutztown EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for a suspected serious injury.

Police say it is not known if Byung was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Due to the severe damage to the tractor-trailer combo, both were towed by Bethel Trucking.

Byung was charged with driving at an unsafe speed.

Hamburg, Kutztown, Weisenberg and Kempton fire departments assisted at the scene.

According to police, I-78 westbound was closed for approximately five hours and traffic was diverted off I-78 West at the New Smithville exit onto Old Route 22.
