Girls reach late Sunday

Salisbury may have not started the inaugural Cedar Beach Basketball Showcase on a strong foot, but it certainly finished on one.

After falling to Boyertown’s B team on Friday night to kick off the tournament, the Lady Falcons looked like a different team on Saturday. Not even 24 hours later, they began a string of three straight wins to advance into play late Sunday afternoon where their run came to an end.

And while the start wasn’t necessarily the best on Friday night under the lights, it was a solid showing against a school that won last year’s state title in Boyertown. Not many players might have suited up for that team, but it has a history of rich tradition that Salisbury didn’t shy away from.

“They are the defending state champs in 6A,” Mladosich said. “They are good fundamentally. They play all year.”

The result was a four-point defeat, but Salisbury responded on Saturday when play resumed.

The Lady Falcons, behind a game-high 19 points from rising-senior Sarah McGee, built on a 12-point lead at halftime and downed Dieruff’s B team 50-18.

McGee, one of three seniors returning next year, will be the Lady Falcons’ unquestioned scoring threat. She’s built on a solid junior season with a smooth summer thus far.

“We moved the ball well, [and] we shot the ball well,” Mladosich said. “Defensively, we didn’t rebound the ball at all. We have to work on some things. But it’s the summer.

“She [McGee] is athletic, and she understands when to get in the passing lanes. She can pass. She is good.”

Salisbury also received 10 points from Kelly Gardus against the Huskies, another senior who saw significant time last year. Olivia Hoeing added nine and Alicia Burkhardt, the final returning senior, pitched in with eight.

That win kept Salisbury’s tournament hopes alive. Then, the Lady Falcons added another day of play after they defeated Panther Valley later in the evening on Saturday, 25-19.

On Sunday morning, Salisbury advanced to one of final six spots in the consolation bracket with a dominant 40-13 win over Emmaus. The Falcons scored 20 unanswered in that victory. Boyertown’s A team, which reached the consolation round final, defeated the Lady Falcons in their next game.

University City beat Freedom in the championship game.
