NASD education continues as summer programs begin

It’s summer. School’s out. But wait, school’s actually in - as in it’s the “in” thing in Northampton Area School District.

While the last day of classes was June 6 in NASD, education in the district continues through summer enrichment programs, NASD Board of Education was told at its June 12 meeting.

“Education is becoming a year-round initiative,” NASD board President David Gogel said.

Enrollment in Camp Invention, which emphasizes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), increased from 66 Northampton Area High School students in summer 2016 to 84 high school students in summer 2017 and from 12 Northampton Area Middle School students in summer 2016 to 19 middle school students in summer 2017.

“The numbers are growing, so that’s great,” NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph Kovalchik said.

A Title I summer program, with a theme of “Superheroes and Storytelling,” has 75 students enrolled, said Dr. Lydia Hanner, NASD director of curriculum and instruction.

And 80 incoming kindergarten students, with 40 at George Wolf Elementary School and 40 at Siegfried Elementary School, will prepare for the 2017-18 school year.

“Research has shown how important summer enrichment is,” said Dr. Kathleen Ott, NASD director of data, grants and special programs.

In other business at the June 12 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve:
