MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL
Macungie Borough Council’s June 19 meeting focused on the fire department and the budget for the Macungie Institute.
Council discussed a fire department certification form during the meeting. Questions had been raised about whether the form was signed by Council President Chris Becker.
It was revealed during the meeting Becker did sign the form during the Nov. 23, 2015, borough council meeting. The form was brought to the meeting by the fire chief and Becker was told the form had to be signed that night.
Moving forward, council discussed two motions. The first motion said any documents signed during meetings should be listed in the meetings along with copies of the documents being kept in borough hall.
The other motion involved all questions being submitted in writing and being answered in one of the following two meetings. The motion was adjusted to only include questions regarding the borough council or previous actions taken.
Resident Tim Schantzenbach questioned the validity of the training document Becker signed. Council said notarization of training documents is no longer necessary.
Becker said he does not sign documents outside of either borough hall or the Barry Isett office. He also said he trusts the organizations that come before him unless there is reason to question them.
In other business, council discussed the budget for the Macungie Institute. For the past several years, the Macungie Institute has had trouble becoming self-sufficient. There was a debate about how much administrative management is necessary. It was suggested the institute could be used just for large borough events. There were discussions that the institute should be seen not as a rental property but as a borough property.
Macungie resident Dave Fatzinger spoke about his continuing issue with his neighbor parking construction vehicles on the border of his property. Council said that although Fatzinger’s claims sound egregious they have to follow procedure. Becker said there are definitely issues which have to be resolved.
Council talked about a detour due to railroad maintenance June 19 through June 30 closing Gehman Road and bringing more cars through Macungie.
The next Macungie Borough Council meeting will be July 5 due to the holiday. Typically meetings take place on the first and third Mondays of the month. Meetings begin 7:30 p.m. in Macungie Borough Hall.
Council mentioned the first meeting in August will be held in the Macungie Institute.
