LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP COLUMN

The Lower Macungie Pool is open daily noon to 8 p.m. The pool will close 4:45 p.m. June 26 and July 6 and 13 for swim meets. A summer kickoff party will be held 1 to 5 p.m. June 25 with Bar None Entertainment 1 to 3 p.m. and a mermaid visit 3 to 5 p.m. A DJ pool party with Wesley Works will be held 5 to 7 p.m. July 14. There will be another mermaid visit 2 to 4 p.m. July 18. For more information, check the website www.lowermac.org.

Registration for Lower Macungie Township Pool swim lessons can be made by contacting the Lower Macungie Township Community Center 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will not be a designated night for signups.

Concordia Lutheran Church will hold Vacation Bible School “Mighty Fortress” 9 a.m. to noon June 26 through 28 for pre-kindergarten students through sixth grade. For registration information, contact the church at 610-965-3265.

The Pioneer Band will perform 7 p.m. July 8 at East Texas Park. Mark James and Country Sunset Band will perform 6 to 8 p.m. July 15 at the Hills at Lockridge Park. School’s Out Band will perform 6 to 8:30 p.m. at East Texas Park.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon July 3 and 17 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The community center offers a number of activities. Summer children’s programs include creative arts theater camp, tennis lessons, indoor sports camp, drawing and painting art camps, Mad Science camp, Princess Camp, Tiny Dancers Princess Camp, sewing camp, Nature Superheroes, Zombie Survival Camp and Tech Trio.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site spring/summer hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The site is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for drop off. Applications can be found at www.lowermac.com. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.

The Lower Macungie Library will be closed July 4 in observation of Independence Day.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. July 5 to discuss “Before the Fall” by Noah Hawley. The book for Aug. 2 is “The Marriage of Opposites” by Alice Hoffman.

Registration is open for the 2017 Summer Reading Program “Build a Better World” for children infants through sixth grade. There are also programs for students in first through fifth grades Tuesdays throughout the summer. Registration can be completed online or at the library. Students entering grades six to 12 can register for Teen Reads Club. There is also a Summer Reading Club for adults.

The library will present the eight week Great Decisions program by the Foreign Policy Association 6 p.m. Wednesdays starting June 24. Program booklets and copies of the required weekly reading are available at the library. Each session includes a 30-minute video followed by a discussion. The topics include the European Union, Geopolitics of Energy, Trade Policy, South China Sea and Saudi Arabia.

The library is now accepting book donations for the fall book sale. Book sorting for the next book sale will begin June 22 and continue 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursdays.

The Friends of the Library will have its next meeting 10 a.m. Sept. 16 in the library. New members are welcome.
