Theater Review: A heart-warming ‘Ice Princess’ at PSF

Princess Gemma and her brother Prince Kylan, played by Stephanie Hodge and Dane Lavery, respectively, are playing in the woods one day when they find a scarf laying on the forest floor.

The princess picks it up and puts it around her neck, only to find out just a short time later that it has given her the ability to throw snow and ice from her fingertips. They run through the forest together freezing everything from the pond to the waterfall.

All is well until the two siblings begin to play a little rough and the princess accidentally throws ice at her brother, leaving him freezing and shivering on the ground.

That’s the premise for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival production of “The Ice Princess,” through Aug. 5, Schubert Theatre, Labuda Center for the Performing Arts, DeSales University, Center Valley.

The show, directed by Pirronne Yousefzadeh, is based on the well-known story, “The Snow Queen,” by Hans Christian Andersen.

After a few days, with her brother showing no improvement, Princess Gemma decides to find the Snow Queen, believing that she may the only one who can save Prince Kylan.

On her journey, she meets a reindeer (Julianna Schaub), who can’t fly; a troll (Michael Coval), who speaks backwards, and a robber (Keri Ann Moynihan). They believe that the Snow Queen can help them, too, and so they join the princess on her journey.

At long last, they reach the Snow Queen, played by Ilia Paulino, who helps them, including Prince Kylan.

The Princess returns the scarf and all returns to normal, but with a surprising and unexpected plot twist that brings the prince and princess’s family even closer.

“The Ice Princess” is a wonderful time from start to finish. Steve TenEyck’s set design is charming and magical.

The character portrayals are incredibly animated and absolutely hilarious. The way the actors work collaboratively and support each other throughout the performance is amazing.

A variety of music is played throughout the show, all catchy and well-composed. There is truly never a dull moment. This is arguably one of the best children’s shows I have seen at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival.
