LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

A Day for Doug

What happens when a beloved member of the community is struck by a devastating disease?

In the case of 1976 Northwestern Lehigh graduate Doug Rassler, who has gastroesophageal cancer, the community rallies around him.

Katie Kressley, a childhood friend of Rassler’s daughter, Sarah, jumped in with both feet and organized a “Crafts for a Cure” fundraiser June 11 at the Lynnport Fire Company.

There were more than 50 volunteers assisting at the event which featured 60 crafters offering their wares, a 300-plus basket raffle, a 50/50, and five live bands, including Lost Love Horizon, Scott Marshall Band, Tj Bebb, Paul Knakk and Nick of Time, along with food and a bake sale.

Even representatives from the newly revived A-Treat were on hand with cans of the soda company’s famous flavors.

A motorcycle run, which started at Classics Harley Davidson, Leesport, saw some 150 bikers arriving at the fire company just after noon.

Bebb opened the fundraiser by singing a rousing rendition of the national anthem.

State Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, was on hand to declare June 11 Doug Rassler Day and to present him with a Certificate of Recognition.

“I see love and compassion in each basket,” Day said addressing the gathering. “I see young women helping other people.

“Let the people know we are here for Doug.”

Day then explained that Kressley was splitting the proceeds of the fundraiser, which ultimately raised more than $10,000, between the Rassler family and the American Cancer Society.

“This is such a great event,” Day said. “I know Doug as another great father in the 187th Legislative District.”
