Requests received for pavilion use at park

The Recreation Commission received requests for use of the Northwestern Community Park fields and pavilion at its May 31 meeting.

President Don Link said he was glad to see the facility getting more community use.

Slatedale-Emerald Lions Club will use the pavilion for a meeting noon-4 p.m. June 13 and the Ontelaunee Lions want the pavilion from 5-9 p.m. June 21.

On July 8, there will be a family picnic between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the pavilion with electric, water and open restrooms requested.

The local Baptist church will have a softball tournament on five fields Aug. 5.

The rec commission approved all requests.

Night in the Country Committee Chair Kathy Hermany reported letters have been sent to the fire companies and fire police about the annual celebration in August.

A new person will be needed to run the car cruise with the retirement of Dave Moyer from the Northwestern Lehigh School District who has been in charge of the cruise.

Hermany said activity applications have been coming in slowly. She has applied for a Dumpster, and the Miller-Keystone Bloodmobile will be on hand.

Jim Hughes, maintenance, requested a “Slow, children at play” sign erected.

PPL wants $12,000 to move an electric line that crosses the bottom field. It was decided to let it wait.

Prices are being sought both for new benches and to replace only those parts that are damaged. Getting parts and hardware will be tried to see if it works. Otherwise the choice is to go with aluminum benches.

Lynn Township representative Justin Smith of the bylaws committee said if the draft of the new bylaws is good it will go to individual township boards and the school for approval and then come back to the recreation commission.

If there are no comments, the bylaws will be advertised.

The NYAA turned in a proposed recreation commission policy for camps and clinics as it was requested to do at the April meeting.

The policy, shortened by items that seemed to be duplicates, will be up for discussion again in June.

Item 1 is that requests for use are to come to the commission from the NYAA sports director for the particular sport in question through the normal facilities request process to allow the commission to control scheduling.

The second item is that NYAA camps or clinics will be allowed to use the rec fields without additional fee regardless of whom the NYAA chooses to provide instruction for the event.

And, the third item is the rec commission reserves the right to charge for any cleanup or repairs that result from use.

Looking into prices for batting cages, the commission found one that is L-shaped allowing for two uses in the single construction.

Handicapped access will be required. Design, netting, permits and inspections will bring the price up to $27,800 for two cages.

A check will be made as to whether services are covered by state contracts which would be a source for a better price.

Heidelberg Township representative Steve Bachman suggested the townships may be able to do the excavating and steel work. The final design must be approved by CodeMaster Inspection Services.

The grant for the walking trail has been submitted by Brian Carl of Weisenberg Township who submitted the application on behalf of the rec commission.
