MACUNGIE COLUMN

The Macungie Farmers Market is open 4 to 7 p.m. every Thursday through October except Aug. 24. The market features local family farmers providing home grown food: fruits, vegetables, meat products, eggs, baked goods, plants and more. Parking is available at the park parking lot and along North Walnut Street.

Macungie Pool will be open noon to 8 p.m. through Aug. 27 weekdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends. The pool will close 5 p.m. June 15 and 22 for swim meets. With warmer temperatures come the many outside events held from spring through fall at Macungie Memorial Park. Volunteers are needed to help with these events. If you are able to donate some time, call 610-966-4289 or email macungiepark@gmail.com.

There will be a cruise night June 10 at Macungie Memorial Park. Hot rods will start arriving 3 p.m.

The Macungie Institute will hold an open house for businesses and organizations to view the meeting room space for business and social events 5 to 7 p.m. June 12. There will be light refreshments and door prizes. RSVP attendance to 610-966-7830.

Grace Lutheran Church will hold a Strawberry Festival and Community Fair 4 to 7 p.m. June 24.

There will be an Old Fashioned Fourth of July Picnic 10 a.m. July 4 at Macungie Memorial Park. The bicycle/wagon parade begins 10 a.m. There will be a duck race in the creek 11 a.m. Macungie Band will perform 11:30 a.m. in the bandshell. There will also be games and contests for children as well as the annual Bear Swamp Derby. Bring your own matchbox type car or purchase one at the picnic. The fire department and ambulance corps will have equipment on display. Macungie Pool will host events outside the pool 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. No reservations are needed to picnic on the grounds but pavilions must be rented in advance. The Macungie Park Board of Directors meeting will be held downstairs 7 p.m. June 27. The public is welcome.

Ben’s fifth grade class project is a living wax museum. Each child picks a person of historical interest. They research that person, prepare a tri-fold board outlining their accomplishments and dress up as that character for their final presentation. Ben chose Frederick Banting, a Canadian doctor who discovered insulin and won a Nobel Prize for his accomplishments. For months, Ben researched and prepared for his presentation. At the school open house, each child sat still in costume by their board. When a visitor came by and pressed the button on the table, they would come to life and answer questions. Being the presenter he is, Ben worked up his own special line. As we watched, a parent pushed his button. Ben sat up straight, turned to his visitor, and said, “Oh, I didn’t see you there…”
