Salisbury High School senior Leandra Roelker was named District 11 Female Tennis Scholar-Athlete on May 31 at a banquet at the Best Western in Bethlehem.

“It’s such an honor to even be considered,” Roelker said. “I could have been happy to go home a [nominee].”

Roelker’s record was 21-3 at No. 1 singles this year and was a First Team All-Colonial League selection.

“I thought it was me when [master of ceremonies Neil Curtis] said my record, and then I heard class rank and different characteristics,” said Roelker. “I was thinking I fall under these, but maybe it’s someone else.”

Roelker is the number one singles Colonial League champion, and was a District 11 Class 2A doubles tennis semifinalist.

Roelker is also a summer tennis camp instructor at Sand Island in Bethlehem, and a staff member at Winning Touch Tennis in Allentown.

Rob Benson is the Falcons’ girls’ tennis coach.

District XI female nominees, in addition to Roelker, were Margaret Fleck of Allentown Central Catholic, Victoria Swanson of Bangor, Brooke Adams of Bethlehem Catholic, Caroline Kyaw of East Stroudsburg North, Haille Hoeflein of Easton, Julia Pan of Emmaus, Kaitlyn Swint of Freedom, Joyce Kim of Liberty, Skyler Hammond of Moravian Academy, Madison Stewart of Nazareth, Emma Angle of Northampton, Danielle Hibshman of Notre Dame Green Pond, Madison Staiman of Parkland, Vivian Smith of Pen Argyl, Destiny Thompson of Pocono Mountain East, Daniela Sanchez of Saucon Valley, Alexandra Curtis of Southern Lehigh, and Ariel McKusick of Wilson.

Northampton Community College women’s tennis coach Megan Sell was the banquet’s main speaker.

Sell played tennis at Nazareth High School, NCC, and Kutztown University. She spoke about the lessons she’s learned from the sport, including the highs, the lows, human nature, and even serendipity.
