Salisbury High School senior John Yurconic II was named District 11 Male Tennis Scholar-Athlete on May 31 at a banquet at the Best Western in Bethlehem.

“Honestly, it’s a great feeling,” Yurconic said. “I thought I already had the icing on the cake, so I think this is something on top of that. It’s been an amazing four years.”

Yurconic played four years of varsity singles tennis for the Falcons, compiling a record of 77-21. He is the 2017 District 11 Class 2A singles tennis champion, and he was a PIAA state doubles tennis champion with his cousin Mason Groff in 2016.

“Coming in my freshman year, I was nowhere where I needed to be,” said Yurconic, who played multiple sports since childhood and eventually settled on tennis and soccer. “I met my current coach, Todd Kane, at Lehigh Country Club, and the past three years have been hard, hard training, and I have him to thank.”

Yurconic is also an intern at Lehigh Country Club, running tennis clinics there. The Salisbury senior plans to attend Lafayette College and major in engineering.

District 11 male scholar-athlete nominees, in addition to Yurconic, were Adam Warner of Allentown Central Catholic, Connor Wilchek of Bangor, Colby Treadwell of Bethlehem Catholic, Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick of East Stroudsburg South, Evan Charlesworth of Emmaus, Ryan Lombardo of Freedom, Daniel Lynn of Liberty, Abbhi Sekar of Moravian Academy, Ben Tauber of Nazareth, Lucas Foulk of Northampton, Aneesh Kapoor of Parkland, Richard Trott of Pocono Mountain East, Mason Hudnall of Pen Argyl, Jacob Nichols of Saucon Valley, Harrison Piel of Southern Lehigh, and Michael Glovas of Wilson.

District XI Tournament Chairman Neil Curtis was the banquet’s master of ceremonies, who said this was not the first time the male and female tennis scholar-athletes were from the same school in the same year.
