Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival warms up to ‘The Ice Princess’
A brave princess meets new friends, learns a valuable lesson, and discovers magical powers in “The Ice Princess.”
The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival (PSF) show, ideal for children ages 3 to 12, opens June 2 and continues through Aug. 5 in Schubert Theatre, Labuda Center for the Performing Arts, DeSales University, Center Valley.
Children can get a front row seat for the show with onstage carpet seating, and they can meet the actors after performances for photos and autographs.
Pirronne Yousefzadeh makes her directorial debut at PSF with “The Ice Princess.”
Pirronne has directed and developed new work at Ars Nova, Partial Comfort Productions, Noor Theatre, Ma-Yi Theater Company, Actors Theatre of Louisville, La Jolla Playhouse, Huntington Theatre Company, Cleveland Playhouse, Geva Theatre Center, InterAct Theatre Company, and Hangar Theatre.
She is a Usual Suspect at New York Theatre Workshop, an Affiliate Artist at New Georges Affiliated Artist, a member of Ensemble Studio Theatre, a recipient of Williamstown Theatre Festival’s Sagal Fellowship, and an alumna Drama League Directors Project, Lincoln Center Directors Lab, and Soho Rep Writer-Director Lab. She received an MFA from Columbia University.
Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic “The Snow Queen,” and adapted by Brandon E. McLaudren, “The Ice Princess” follows Princess Gemma and her brother, Prince Kylan, on a magical journey through wintry woods.
“The power of love and family” is what director Pirronne Yousefzadeh would like audience members to take away from the show. With the help of friends met along her journey, Princess Gemma finds the courage and strength to bring healing to a loved one.
“The power of theater lies in how it can inspire an audience’s imagination,” says Yousefzadeh.
“Children are some of the most imaginative audience members. The show is a tribute to the power of theater, a tribute to the way children play. This is reflected in the collaborative, ensemble-based performance.”
“The Snow Queen” is played by Ilia Paulino, a recent graduate of DeSales with PSF credits, including “The Little Mermaid,” “Rapunzel,” and “Taming of the Shrew.” She plans to pursue an MFA at the Yale School of Drama this fall.

Prince Kylan is played by Dane Lavery, who performed in Act 1 productions of “Charley’s Aunt” and “The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge.”
The show is narrated by Julianne Schaub, playing a reindeer. Schaub, a recent DeSales graduate, has performed in DeSales’ Act 1 and Act 3 productions, including “How to Succeed in Business,” “Me and My Girl,” and “Peter Pan.”
The King and Queen are played by Bo Sayre and Emilie Gubler, respectively.
