The month of May has been a memorable time for Salisbury baseball head coach Mike Pochron. He was recently re-elected for his second six-year term as judge in Magisterial District 31-1-08.

And a couple days before to that re-election, Pochron reached an elusive milestone on the baseball diamond. Salisbury’s final win of the 2017 season, a 7-1 victory over Dieruff on May 12, was Pochron’s 250th as head coach of the Falcons’ varsity baseball team.

The milestone was a complete shock to Pochron when he was notified of it after the game.

“I was actually unaware of it,” said Pochron, head coach at Salisbury since 2000. “I really don’t keep track of things like that. But what it says is that I’ve been fortunate to have some pretty good players that have won a lot of games for me. That’s really what it says. I’ve been around long enough and have had some pretty good teams.”

Pochron started as an assistant coach in 1979 and became head coach at the JV level. He was also the varsity assistant for a number of years before he started as Salisbury’s head coach at the beginning of the new millennium.

“The guy who hired me as the JV coach, Frank Yelinko, he was my coach,” Pochron said. “Really there have only been three coaches at Salisbury.

“The idea was I would start out as the JV coach, become the varsity assistant coach, and then be fortunate enough to be the head coach. And then have as many years as I got, you’re fortunate and you really don’t worry about wins. It wasn’t a goal of mine to get this many wins. It’s something you don’t even think about.”

All Pochron was focused on was being the best coach to his players that he could possible be. The rest just happened to fall into place over the years, and he credits much of his success to people that surrounded him.

“When you coach this long, you are fortunate enough to have the support of your family,” Pochron said. “You get the support of the administration, so that makes you want to stick around. The most important thing is you have to have good players. That’s what I was blessed with.”

Pochron has led Salisbury to three Colonial League championships and three district titles over his career. His latest championship came in 2013, when he led the Falcons to both league and district crowns.
