All about the bass:The Peter Paulsen Quintet performs in the “Jazz Upstairs” series, 7:30 p.m. May 19, Rodale Room, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown. Paulsen, Principal Bass of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, is Assistant Professor of Double Bass-Jazz Studies at West Chester University. The quintet will present two world premieres, “Chair Suite” by Paulsen, and “Concrete & Fireflies” by Jonathan Ragonese, which utilize and combine specifically composed ensemble passages with improvised, interactive sections. The concert will include arrangements of jazz standards which feature the musicians in solos, duets and trios within the larger ensemble. The quintet includes Paulsen, above, second from left, bass, composer, arranger; Chris Hanning, percussion-drums; Ron Stabinsky, piano; Ragonese, saxophones, composer, and John Swana, electronic valve instrument. Do the Freddy:It’s that time again. The Freddy Awards nominations have been announced. The 15th edition of the awards show will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. May 25 on 69 WFMZ-TV. Though the broadcast is usually sold out, tickets are available for the “Dress Rehearsal,” 4:30 - 10 p.m. May 24, State Theatre for the Arts, Easton. Catch a glimpse of performance rehearsals, including the opening and closing numbers, lead actor and actress medleys and overall musical nominees. “Most Valuable Players,” a documentary made during the 2008 Freddy Awards program, airs on 69 WFMZ TV at 7 p.m. May 20.
