STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Q. What grade are you in?
A. I am currently a senior at Emmaus High School
Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?
A. My favorite subject is math specifically calculus. It fascinates me to see the practical applications of new topics we learn and relate them to other classes I’m taking including economics, statistics and computer science.
Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A. I have received recognition for my accomplishments in German, computer science and general academics. I have competed at the Penn State German Day Competition yearly and placed in the top three for spelling and poetry recitation over the past four years. I am a member of both National Honor Society and the German National Honors Society. I am looking forward to competing in the International All-Stars Competition for the American Computer Science on my second invitation this year following my first invitation my sophmore year.
Q. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A. I am involved in Youth and Technology Ministries at Bethany UMC in Macungie and I have been an active member of both the Emmaus Steel Hornets Robotics team and the Emmaus Computer Science Club. The Computer Science Club competes several times each year at various contests at other high schools and colleges. This spring my team of four took first place at the Bloomsburg University programming competition where we were the only one of several dozen teams to complete all of the programming problems.
Q. What is your next goal after high school?
A. My goal after graduating high school is to earn a degree in computer science from Elizabethtown College.
Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?
A. I would consider my participation in the ACSL All-Star competition my latest challenge to date. The all day international competition consisted of two sections of challenging problems to solve as individuals and competing as a team.
Q. For what would you like to be remembered?
A. I hope to be remembered for my willingness to share new things I learn with my friends and peers.
Q. Who is in your family?
A. My mother Tina, father David, stepmother Cristin, brother Nathan, stepbrothers Jon and Josh, stepsisters Rachel and Becca and my cat Tiggy.
Q. Whom do you admire? Why?
A. I admire Elon Musk. When he was dissatisfied with the technologies and industries available to him, he went on to innovate and build several successful companies, including the private spaceflight company, SpaceX and the electric car company Tesla Motors. Both strive to provide cutting edge ideas and technologies.
Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?
A. Take advantage of every opportunity provided to you and do your best to learn from your failures and mistakes.
