SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

Students and an educator were honored at the May 10 board meeting of the Salisbury Township School District director’s meeting.

SkillsUSA District Competition Medal Winners were Zaki Al-Bajali, first place in carpentry, Cory Brunner, second place in tech computer applications, John Kochenberger, second place in electronics technology, Dustin Kramer, first place in technical drafting, Desiree Nester, first place in basic health care skills and Alyssa Wygand, second place in first aid/CPR.

SkillsUSA State Competition Medal Winners were Adam Boyd, first place in building maintenance, Desiree Nester, second place in basic health care skills and Kacy Roblyer, as state competition qualifier in dental technology.

Kacy Roblyer placed first in dental science in the Health Occupations Students of America State Competition.

Cory Brunner placed second in computer applications in the FBLA District Competition.

John Kochenberger placed first in hotel lodging management in the Distributive Education Clubs of America District Competition.

John Kochenberger was a gold medal winner in written test hotel and lodging management; role play A &B hotel and lodging management at the DECA State Competition.

Douglas Silfies placed second in Cupcake Wars (pre-engineering) in the What’s So Cool About Manufacturing? Competition.

Brandon Williams, was a bronze medal winner in applied math for culinary management at the PA Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Leadership Conference.

State Rep. Daniel T. McNeill, D-133rd, presented a House of Representatives proclamation to Mahlon Reihman for his swimming accomplishments. Daniel Bonge was also to be honored but was not in attendance.

Teacher Kelly Wetherhold received the Apple Distinguished Educator award at the meeting. “Kelly goes above and beyond for our students,” Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Lynn Funi-Hetten said.

“I want to thank the board for creating the space where everyone can do great things,” Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss said commenting on the number of awards presented.

In other business, the board approved the 2017-2018 proposed preliminary general fund budget in the amount of $37,724,631. This budget includes a proposed 2.5 percent increase to residents who were assured this is not the final budget and work is still being done to reduce the increase. On an average home value of $206,000, the increase in taxes would be $104.

Board members also authorized the administration to work with PFM Financial Advisors to refund bonds to realize a net savings of a minimum of $150,000. Board President Frank Frankenfield said the district is hoping for a $200,000 savings.

In personnel news, Deborah Pelc, special education secretary, will retire at the end of the work day Aug. 1. Denise Steiger, food service coordinator, will retire effective at the end of the work day June 30.

Joshua Ecker was approved as a full-time seventh grade teacher at Salisbury Middle School effective Aug. 22, pending completion of requirements.

Abigail Frisch was approved as a full-time long-term substitute math teacher at SMS effective Aug. 22.

Mario Amato will transfer from a learning support teacher at Western Salisbury Elementary School to a sixth grade learning support teacher at SMS Aug. 22.

Laura Nogueira was named co-advisor for No Place for Hate for the 2016-2017 school year.

Eric Frankenfield, Robert Kulp IV, Joseph Galantini and Adam Boyd were approved for summer custodial help.

The following policies were approved: lesson plans, extracurricular co-curricular programs, intellectual property, branding rights, district use of copyrighted materials, naming rights, advertising on district property and public presence on district grounds and at district events.

The next curriculum and technology meeting will be held 7 p.m. May 22. The next operations committee meeting will be 7 p.m. June 5. Another curriculum and technology meeting will be held 7 p.m. June 12 and the next board meeting will be held June 14. All meetings are in the administration building.
