Borough council announced there will be a meeting 7:30 p.m. May 22 to discuss recent fire department issues. The meeting will be held at borough hall.

A resident at the meeting had concerns about fire department training and certifications, specifically wondering who signed off on the training. The resident was encouraged to attend the upcoming meeting.

“This is an issue that will take a good deal of time and requires its own meeting,” Council President Chris Becker said.

Other business at the May 15 meeting of the Macungie Borough Council included a discussion of police vehicles and license plate readers.

The police department previously asked to add another patrol car, bringing their total up to four. There was discussion about how much the additional car was used and what it was used for.

Borough council questioned what would happen if two of the cars needed to be replaced at the same time. The police department explained in that situation they would only replace one car and just get rid of the other.

One of the reasons the police wanted the fourth car was to use a license plate reader they rented. There were questions from the public as to why the state does not offer grants for police departments to buy license plate readers since the state eliminated inspection stickers on license plates.

There was also a discussion about signage for the Macungie Institute. The plan would be for the sign to show rentals are available and to show any upcoming events. The discussion took place during this meeting because the grant is due at the end of the month.

The grant would be for $2,000 with equal matching. A decision was made by the borough council to go with a two post double-sided sign.

Borough Manager Chris Boehm mentioned the Macungie Farmers Market opens May 18. This year, the farmers market includes 29 vendors.

The meeting ended with an executive session. Council planned to discuss two items - the first item was an upcoming contract negotiation and the second item was a personnel issue. Council said there could be possible action taken during the executive session.

Macungie Borough Council typically holds meetings 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month in borough hall.
