The Lower Macungie Library will be closed May 29 in observation of Memorial Day.

The Summer Reading Program “Build a Better World” will begin June 10. The program includes prizes for reading and special programs.

Miss Lisa will be available to help with registration and answer questions 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Lower Macungie Library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. June 7 to discuss “The Girls of Atomic City” by Denise Kiernan. The book for July 5 is “Before the Fall” by Noah Hawley.

Local Author Day will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 20. The Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group will host a “Battle of the Books” with local authors reading from their books with the audience acting as judges. There will also be author discussions for those interested in starting writing.

The program “Buckets Full of Nature” will be offered 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 23 for preschool and kindergarten children ages three to six. Children will experience hands-on science and nature exploration through reading, art and experimentation. The program for May is “Soil Secrets and Squirmy Worms.” The program for June 6 is “Aqua Blitz.”

There will be a craft drop-by 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 31 for adults and teens to make their own craft.

The library is sponsoring a bus trip to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 6. The cost includes lunch, tour and bus. Reserve online or stop by the library.

The Friends of the Library wish to extend a huge thank you to all who donated, volunteered or shopped at the spring book sale. The library will accept book donations for the fall book sale starting June 1.

The Friends of the Library will have their next meetings 10 a.m. May 20 and Sept. 16 in the library. New members are welcome.

The Lower Macungie pool will open for the season May 27. On May 27 to 29 and June 3 and 4, the pool will be open noon to 8 p.m. Starting June 10, the pool will be open daily noon to 8 p.m. The pool will close 4:45 p.m. June 19, 26 and July 6 and 13 for swim meets. Registration for Lower Macungie Township pool swim lessons can be made by contacting the Lower Macungie Township Community Center 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will not be a designated night for sign-ups.

The Lower Macungie Historical Society will hold a spring open house and planting 2 to 4 p.m. June 11 at the log house on Hamilton Boulevard. There will also be tours of the house and a walk through Hamilton Crossings to look at the signboards about Lower Macungie’s history.

Concordia Lutheran Church will hold Vacation Bible School “Mighty Fortress” 9 a.m. to noon June 26 through 28 for pre-kindergarten through grade six. For registration information, contact the church at 610-965-3265.

The Outlaws featuring Crazy Elmer will perform 7 p.m. June 3 at East Texas Park. The Macungie Band will perform 7 p.m. June 17 at the Hills at Lockridge. Pioneer Band will perform 7 p.m. July 8 at East Texas Park.

Lower Macungie offers garden plot rentals on Bogie Avenue. Plots are available to rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact the community center for more information.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon June 5 and 19 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

Macungie Ambulance will offer “Family and Friends Basic/Community CPR” 6 to 8 p.m. May 24 and “Health Care Provider Advanced CPR” 6 to 9 p.m. June 1 at the community center.

The community center offers a number of activities. Programs include Pilates and girls night out card making classes. Summer children’s programs include creative arts theater camp, tennis lessons, indoor sports camp, drawing and painting art camps, mad science camp, princess camp, tiny dancers princess camp, sewing camp, nature superheroes, zombie survival camp and tech trio.

There will be a safe sitter program 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10 at the community center.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site spring/summer hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The site is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Yard waste permits are required for drop-off. Applications can be found at www.lowermac.com. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.
