An Alburtis man faces charges of aggravated and simple assault and harassment after he allegedly pointed a handgun at two people and struck a man in the face with a gun.

According to a criminal complaint prepared by borough police, Stephen Charles Baumann, 40, of the 200 block of South Main Street, pointed a medium sized silver semi-automatic handgun at two people the evening of May 3. He also allegedly struck one person, a male, in the face with the muzzle of the gun, “causing bodily injury.”

An affidavit of probable cause in the case outlined the events as follows. Senior Patrolman Cory E. Fluck, in full uniform and in a marked patrol vehicle, was approached by a male and a female 8:59 p.m. May 3. The man was bleeding from the right side of his face. The man identified Baumann as allegedly pointing a handgun at him and striking him with the gun. The man stated he was in his vehicle with his wife when Baumann allegedly ran toward the vehicle and pointed a handgun in their direction. The male, according to police, produced his handgun and pointed it at Baumann and Baumann allegedly struck the male with the end of his handgun on the right side of the face.

According to media reports, a five-hour long standoff, during which Baumann and his wife refused to leave their apartment, ended with Baumann’s peaceful surrender to police in the early morning of May 4.
