Two seats, 2 candidates seek seats on Heidelberg Board

Jonathan Jakum, a Republican, is unopposed in the May 16 Municipal Primary Election for the two-year term in office vacated by former Supervisor Rodney Schlauch Jr. on the Heidelberg Township Board of Supervisors.

A Heidelberg Township resident for nine years, Jakum graduated from Kutztown University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in communication design. He is a full-time graphic artist.

“I currently serve as a Lehigh County GOP Committeeperson and member of the Environmental Advisory Committee for Heidelberg Township,” Jakum said.

“I am fiscally conservative, with a great appreciation for history, especially local history, preservation of the environment and local sustainability.”

“As a supervisor, I would dedicate myself to maintaining the quality of life for all residents and preserving the rural character of the township,” Jakum said, during his campaign.

Incumbent Supervisor Steve Bachman is also unopposed in his bid to seek re-election to a six-year term on the board.

Bachman has resided in the township since 1986. He served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army in West Germany.

A 1983 graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School, he earned an Associate of Science degree in electrical engineering technology from Lehigh Carbon Community College after serving in the Army.

He and his wife, Justine, have three children Kailyn, Claire and Caleb.

Bachman is a strong supporter of the community’s agricultural heritage and supports agricultural zoning.

“Heidelberg Township is a beautiful place to live and raise a family,” he previously told The Press. “The rural uniqueness of our township is not something to be ignored or forgotten.

“To let this farming community fade away to unbridled development would be a crime.”
