ALBURTIS BOROUGH COUNCIL

The April 28 meeting of the Alburtis Borough Council began with a report from Alburtis Police Chief Robert Palmer on enforcing truck routes in the area. Palmer said he has written about 80 citations in April for truck drivers not staying on the trucking routes. He also said there needs to be better signage for Congdon Hill Drive.

There was a discussion about placing a sign on Penn Avenue stating the truck route ends at Quarry Road. The police chief also talked about the trials he and his department has been involved in when truckers challenged their tickets. Borough Council President Ron DeIaco praised the police department saying the officers are doing a great job.

Another item discussed was Ordinance 538 regarding rental units and fees. There was a question whether the fees should be when the landlord gets registered every year or if there should be fees every time there is an inspection.

There was also a debate about how often inspections occurred. Previously, there was provision saying there was no need for an inspection during the first three years of a building.

A decision was made there should be an inspection before each new tenant, not including the original tenant of a property.

Council discussed a block party request from a local resident. The resident, John Farabaugh, wanted to host the block party along with his family to send off their son, Cpl. Timothy Farabaugh, who serves in the U.S. Marines. Cpl. Farabaugh and his wife are being reassigned for three years of service in Japan.

Farabaugh was requesting to block off Lauren Drive and Thomas Drive from Church Street to the intersection of Thomas and Franklin streets. The event would be May 13 and the road would have to be blocked off noon to 9 p.m., although residents of the blocked off streets would be allow to come and go during that time.

There was also a discussion about work done by Sailor’s Lawn and Landscape Inc. in the borough. The company was responsible for maintaining the old Alburtis landfill property. Alburtis had used the property in the past to dump municipal waste and Deka battery had left old batteries there, causing the property to become a hazardous site. Now the landfill is sealed and Alburtis is responsible for maintaining the lawn on the property.

The borough is asking Sailor’s Lawn and Landscape to complete the final phase of bush and tree removal on the property. Sailor’s Lawn and Landscape will provide a team of three men as well as chainsaws and pruners. The company charges $135 per hour and there is an estimated 30 to 40 hours of work left in the project.

The next meeting will be 7 p.m. May 10 at borough hall. Borough Council meets the second and last Wednesday of each month.
