To the Editor:
If you wanted something so badly, would you go after it?
A 15-year-old girl, named Sydney Ireland, did go after what she wanted. Her dream was to join the Boy Scouts, but they denied her due to a rule that was made in 1916.
Labeling people is wrong!
For example, just because boys are stronger than girls, it does not keep them from doing the same activities every day.
In the article, “15-year-old girl denied permission to join Boy Scouts because of gender” [Sophia Hall, CBS News New York], it says “Others challenged her to join Girl Scouts to help their ‘Gold Award’ program become just as significant, but Sydney already had her eyes set on the Eagle Badge.”
The only reason why the Boy Scouts wouldn’t let Sydney in the club was because of the rule enacted in 1916 by Congress. The article states “Boy Scouts was to serve boys and young men only.”
I highly disagree with the rule that was made, but that was decided in a different time period; it is not the 1900s anymore so the rule should be changed to represent equality for women. We should all stop judging books by their covers because it is a discrimination to our mankind.
Don’t you agree?
