Sydney Ireland should be allowed to join Boy Scouts

To the Editor:

Have you ever wanted to participate in an activity, but you were restrained because of your gender?

Within the past year, Sydney Ireland, 15, of New York, wanted to join her brother in the Boy Scouts but was denied because of her gender.

I disagree with this decision.

Sydney Ireland is just one girl out of many that wants to join the Boy Scouts but has been denied this opportunity. I have brothers and know I am just as capable as them to participate in activities such as sports. These clubs are designed for kids to learn and have fun together, so why discriminate who can have fun?

Even stated in the interview on CBS New York last month, Sydney stated, “It was definitely disappointing! I tried to continue my journey throughout the Boy Scouts and I wasn’t allowed to because I was female!”

Doesn’t that sound wrong and criticizing?

This proves that the boys are just scared of the girls! Sydney should be allowed to follow her dreams and be a member of the Boy Scouts.

Obviously there is another foolish and useless side to this argument. The organization also commended on the idea of revising the club’s rules would, “go outside the bounds of their character.”

I can see their point that revising the rule book would ruin a tradition, but aren’t some traditions in need of revisions? Anyone should be able to join whatever they want no matter what their gender; after all, this is an organization of America!

Sydney Ireland should be allowed to join the Boy Scouts and show the boys what girls are made of!
