Nature Center holds photography contest

The photography contest held at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center for the fourth year was the largest ever.

One hundred fifty-two photographs were submitted and 90 were chosen for exhibit.

The jurors were Phil Campbell, Paul Laincz, Josh Finsel and Anita Collins.

Categories were Insects and Amphibians, Macro of Nature, Your Backyard within Walking Distance and Youth.

Both the first and second places in the People’s Choice award were in the youth category.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to stretch a little bit,” an art teacher talking to a friend about the youth entries said.

Many of the photographs had sale prices and Collins said there were more sales this year than in previous years. One person sold a picture without having the price listed, but he accepted the payment made even though the price was taken from a nearby photo.

Collins, a member of the Entomological Society of America, said there were a lot of good photographs and that the Society is looking for photographs for its 2018 calendar. The place to submit them can be found at www.entsoc.org.

Next year’s categories for the LGNC show are Youth, Water, Lehigh Gap Nature Center and Black and White.

A Tiny Winter Treasure of a snowflake on a succulent earns second place for Lynn Shupp, of Palmerton.
