Lehigh Valley Martial Arts invites the public to attend the World Tai Chi and Qigong Day celebration 10 a.m. April 29 on the Triangle. More than 80 nations will participate in Tai Chi Day to promote the health benefits of Tai Chi. Mayor Winfield Iobst will read a proclamation and after the event, participants are invited to the Lehigh Valley Martial Arts on Jubilee Street for lunch and social time. Emmaus Borough Council will meet 7 p.m. May 1 and 15 at borough hall, 28 S. Fourth St. The borough offices and compost center site are closed May 29 for the Memorial Day holiday.

The new hours of operation for the compost center site May 1 to Sept. 18 are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The Emmaus Historical Society will meet 7 p.m. May 17 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets. The group will hold an election of officers, followed by the program by Bill Barto on “The Emaus Band Goes to War - Part Two.” The Emaus Band, led by John Z. Iobst, marched to Doylestown in September 1861, and enlisted in the 104th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. Part two will answer the question of where the band was while the regiment was under heavy attack at the 1862 Fair Oaks battle.

In honor of Memorial Day, the Emmaus Veterans Committee will hold cemetery services with an honor guard and rifle salute 9 a.m. May 21 at Western Salisbury Union Church. On May 28, the veterans will honor their departed comrades buried in each of the six Emmaus cemeteries. The ceremony includes a short prayer service, a rifle salute and taps. The ceremonies begin 8 a.m. at Calvary cemetery and then as follows: Old Moravian, Moravian at Ridge Street, Lutheran Reformed, Northwood and Evangelical, Second and Ridge streets.

The veterans brick installation ceremony will be held at the Remembrance Garden, 164 E. Main St., 1 p.m. May 28. The Knauss Homestead located near the garden will be open during the brick installation ceremony. For information, visit www.emmausrmembers.org.

Come on out and cheer on the veterans during the annual Memorial Day parade. The parade begins promptly 9 a.m. May 29 at the Emmaus High School parking lot. The line of march is Chestnut Street to the Memorial Triangle, where the Memorial Day program will be held. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held 10 a.m. in the EHS auditorium. All veterans are urged to participate with their Posts.

One of my favorite television programs in May is the Freddy Awards presented by the State Theatre. This is the 15th year for this annual awards program which recognizes and rewards exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theater in high schools of the Lehigh Valley and Warren County, N.J.
