The iconic musical “West Side Story” comes to the stage at Liberty High School at 7 p.m. April 27, 28 and 29, auditorium, Liberty High School, 1115 Linden St., Bethlehem.

With music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents, the musical opened on Broadway in 1957.

The tragic tale of two rival teenage gangs in an Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City is inspired by Shakespeare’s play, “Romeo and Juliet.” Taking place in the mid-1950s, Tony, best friend of the leader of the Jets, a white gang, falls in love with Maria, sister of the leader of the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang.

Judith Rivera directs the Liberty High School production. She is assisted by vocal director Gayle Justice, orchestra director Allen Frank, choreographer Camille Armstrong, assistant choreographer Darah Donaher, set designer Dan Mulligan, set construction Ross Makary, sound specialist Timothy Treweek, lighting specialist Justin Amann and program designer Michael Gori.

“Maria,” “America,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty” and “A Boy Like That” are among the featured songs.

The Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards in 1958, receiving two Tonys. The 1980 Broadway revival received three Tony nominations. The 2009 Broadway revival garnered four Tony nominations, receiving one Tony.
