The psychedelic 1960s comes to the stage at Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts with “Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical” at 7 p.m. April 26, 27, 28, 29 and 2 p.m. April 30, theater, Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, 321 E. Third St., Bethlehem.
With book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, “Hair” debuted off-Broadway in 1967 and opened on Broadway in 1968.
A “tribe” of politically-active hippies live the counterculture life in New York City during the turbulent 1960s. Protagonist Claude Bukowski, roommates George Berger and Sheila Franklin, along with their bohemian friends, explore illegal drugs, the sexual revolution and pacifist principles.
Ashley Weller directs and choreographs the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts production, with assistance from music director Neil Chaban and technical director Peter Wrenn-Meleck.
“Aquarius,” “Be-In (Hare Krishna),” “Hair,” “Easy to Be Hard,” and “The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In)” are among the featured songs.
The Broadway production was nominated for two Tony Awards in 1969. The 2009 Broadway revival received eight Tony nominations, receiving one Tony.
