NCC

Four students at Northampton Community College (NCC) have been named to the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team by Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for students at two-year colleges. Each honoree receives a tuition waiver to any college within the Pennsylvania state system.

Michael Rex, of Northampton, is currently in his last semester at NCC and is planning to transfer to Kutztown University in the fall, where he will be a secondary education major in mathematics.

As vice president of the NCC Honors Club, Rex loves to volunteer and serve his community. He enjoys volunteering at Special Olympics, coaching youth soccer, serving on his local soccer commissioner committee and feeding the homeless.

He would like to thank his family, friends, professors and all those who made his education possible and who have had profound influences on his life.

Members of the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team qualify for two-year scholarships to any of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education institutions and compete at the national level for scholarships from the All-USA Academic Team and the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team.

With an enduring commitment to the regional community it serves and a focus on student success, NCC has developed a reputation as an institution of extraordinary distinction, with state-of-the-art locations in Bethlehem, Southside Bethlehem and Monroe County, serving more than 30,000 students each year from 53 counties, 48 countries and 25 states.

PENN STATE

Habib Yazgi, of Whitehall, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Yazgi is pursuing a degree in biology at Pennsylvania State University.

Yazgi is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of Marcus L. Urann, who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines.
