Parkland: ‘Pippin’

Parkland High School brings the Middle Ages to the stage with “Pippin,” at 7:30 p.m. April 5, 6, 7, 8 and 3 p.m. April 9, auditorium, Parkland High School, 2700 N. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Allentown.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the libretto was written by Roger O. Hirson. The 1972 Broadway premiere was directed by Bob Fosse, with the musical receiving five 1973 Tony Awards of 11 nominations. The 2013 Broadway revival received four Tonys of 10 nominations.

In the tale told by the Leading Player, head of a mysterious performance troupe, Pippin is a prince searching for meaning and significance. The young prince and his father Charlemagne are loosely based on real-life characters from medieval history.

Director and music director Francis Anonia is assisted in the Parkland production by choreographer Kelly Jean Graham, technical director Alex Michaels and pit orchestra director Jim Tully.

Signature songs include “Magic To Do,” “Corner Of The Sky,” “Morning Glow,” “Spread A Little Sunshine” and “Glory.”
