SGA hosts annual dodgeball tournament

The Student Government Advisory of Salisbury High School hosted its fifth annual dodgeball tournament on March 23.

This year, SGA invited Whitehall High School and Catasauqua High School to play in the tournament. Also, participating this year was WFMZ’s team, the “69 All Stars.”

“Competition is fierce this year” SGA Advisor Michael Anderson said.

High school students Scheccid Alayola, Naairah Cherry and Franchesca Celestin sang, “The Star Spangled Banner” to start the dodgeball tournament.

The tournament was very quick and fast-paced with three minute rounds which were judged best two out of three. The teams were extremely energetic and determined to win. That said, one team was too determined. Nearly 30 seconds into the first round, SHS Assistant Principal Brian Muschlitz sustained an injury that put him out of the game. However, his team still pulled through and won the first round.

Following the second round, SGA Dodgeball MVPs, Carlo Jose and Tyler Strauss, received trophies from WFMZ’s Dan Moscaritolo and Jim Vaughn. Jose and Strauss both have been participating in the tournament for the past four years.

The Final Four consisted of the Falcon Faculty, the Dodgeballingtons, the Average Joes and the Ball Never Lies. The Falcon Faculty played hard, but unfortunately, their winning streak ended with a valiant last stand by math teacher, Jonathan Ruiz.

The championship round ended up being the Average Joes versus the Dodgeballingtons. The first round had the crowd on the edge of their seats as Cole Warmkessel, of the Average Joes, clutched and eliminated the Dodgeballingtons with 10 seconds left on the clock. The Dodgeballingtons made a valiant effort to win and came rather close.

In the end, Salisbury’s Average Joes, took first place in the tournament.

“This tournament was very successful,” Anderson said. “We’ll have to see in terms of concessions, but this tournament went very well.”

The money earned from the concessions stands and tickets will be used for SGA to present scholarships to seniors.

Teams participating were: the Snoop Dodge Dodge, The Zephyrs, The Dodgeballingtons, the Dodgefathers, the Falcon Faculty, the 69 All Stars, the Average Joes, the Hash Slinging Slashers, the Purple Cobras, the West Side Chiefs and the Ball Never Lies.

Members of the “Dodgefathers” put together their strategy before their turn in the fifth annual dodgeball tournament at Salisbury High School.
