LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
In a continuing effort to curtail truck traffic within the township, residents on Mertztown Road presented a petition with concerns on Mertztown Road over truck traffic at the March 16 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting.
This petition adds to the growing list of places residents are concerned about trucks traveling in their neighborhoods. Lower Macungie Township has requested signs be installed along Willow Lane to remind trucks they do not belong on this road.
These complaints which include speeding, damaging of property and noise are being given serious consideration. A meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania State Police and others was scheduled March 24 to review these situations. There will be an update at the next board of commissioners meeting.
In other meeting news, Lehigh Valley Active Life sent a letter of thanks to the township for a donation to the group. The group’s activities are open to township residents.
Senator Pat Browne, R-16th, sent a letter to the township regarding the Pennsylvania Department of Economic Development for its multimodal fund for funding transportation needs within municipalities.
John Loeper and Len Biehl were appointed to the public safety commission.
A proposed traffic signal at Minesite Road and Cedar Crest Boulevard was discussed. Keystone has stated the study will cost $13,000. Board of Commissioners President Douglas H. Brown said he felt this is a high amount for this project. Township Engineer Alan Fornwalt said that this is a difficult study as it involves a high volume traffic road and includes possible lane additions for left turns.
Commissioner Ronald W. Beitler said there is no urgency in the project but also said he does not want to drag this out with no backup plans. The vote was four nays and one aye. Commissioner Brian P. Higgins voted in favor.
Modifications are being considered for the intersection of Lower Macungie Road and South Krocks Road due to the personal care facility to be constructed at this site. The modifications will be mainly for pedestrian improvements.
The lights are completed at Wescosville Park. The fields are the last part of the project to be completed.
The snow removal went well within the community; however, there were complaints involving untreated roads or roads that did not get plowed properly. The roads mentioned were state roads which the township crews do not handle.
There were 22 cars towed due to residents not following notifications from the township regarding snow removal. It is not the intention of the township to tow vehicles but if these vehicles are in the way of snow removal and notification has been made, the township has no alternative. The area of concern was Hills of Lockridge.
A grant was received for Spring Ridge Park and Trail. The grant will assist the township in completing the project.
A grant was received for the Lower Macungie Township Library expansion. The Keystone grant was approved with the stipulation that the library remain a library for 50 years. Higgins expressed concern for the length of time but the grant specifies “for 50 years or for the useful life, whichever comes first.”
